AntSnes release 0.2 : Support for all 3rd edition phones

The new AntSnes release 0.2 is ready. The current release 0.2 supports most S60 3rd edition phones. It’s currently tested with N73(3.0), N95(3.1) and N96(3.2). The new package also adds new settings view, which can be used for configuring the emulator for different devices.
Antsnes 0.2:
Download the sis: antsnes_v02
source: antsnes_v02_src.zip

Installation:

  1. Install P.I.P.S 1.3(or later if available) to the phone (pips_nokia_1_3_SS.sis).
You will probably find this file faster by googling it, but if you’re out of luck, you can extract it from official nokia plugin, which can be donwloaded from forum.nokia. This step is not required for all S60 3rd edition phones, so you can also try to skip this phase.
  2. Install AntSnes.
  3. Enjoy

AntSnes settings:
There is two different graphic modes, the n-gage mode and portrait. The portrait mode is the default. It’s meant for most 3rd edition phones(phones without “n-gage mode”). The orientation modification takes effect, when AntSnes is started next time( a restart required).
The N-gage mode is meant for phones with “n-gage mode” like N95 and N96. The N96 can use the multimediakeys by default, but N95 users must use Magic keys to map keys 1-4 to multimediakeys.

Start key config to configure keys. The multimediakeys are not supported in the key config, but you can use any normal keys in here.
Known limitations:

  • The AntSnes is based on GP32’s version of assembly optimized snes9x. It has a lot of tweaks for better performance, and therefore not all games are working. I’m not planning to add any additional support for other games in this release. The AntSnes is just another port of this very well optimized emulator.
  • The sound support is missing. I have spend a lot of time for the sound support, and the biggest problem is that it requires too much processing power. I honestly don’t think that it will be possible with ARM9 based S60 devices like N73 or N96. It might be possible with N95, if some graphic layers are disabled.

Great work on the n95 version 🙂 keep up the good work any change of picodrive with sega cd support lol 🙂

    • Summeli says:

Thanks for the feedback. I guess that you are the first user 🙂 I don’t know what I’m going to do after my AntSnes project. I still have to finish it 🙂 Sound support is missing and I want to improve the video renderer also.

    Thank You!!! Great work!!!
Please make this program full version. (sorry my bad english)
Merry Xmas and Happy New Year!!

  3. LiLStenly says:

I should ask, is there any way to rotate the screen back in portrait on antsnes, because I’m using 6120c and it’s very uncomfortable to play with keyboard buttons like that in landscape mode?
Or do you have any plans to make portrait option in the emulator?
Is it possible to do this things in the future releases?
    Luck!

    • Summeli says:

Not in this version. I have already implemented that feature, and it will be included in the next release. It might be able to make that release even on this week 😉

  4. LiLStenly says:

Great news man, wish you luck in the project!

  5. Trust says:

Thank you very much for the emulator. It works well on 5320XP.
I would like to ask whether PIP installation is required or not, because I did not install it. however, the emulator just works fine.

    • Summeli says:

Some 3.0 edition phones require PIP installation. All newer ( I don’t know how new) phones have that package by default, so there is no need for installation.

  6. LiLStenly says:

Amazing work man, just brilliant, now everything works fine on 6120c and also I don’t need magic keys anymore… if you ask me, you already beat vsun with that release.
    🙂

tested on my Nokia E65 but runs slowly: (the next version will be faster?:), I have a doubt, the Nokia N73 and 65 and has 2 processors right? would be possible to use a sound and one for the graphics?

    • Summeli says:

The N95 would probably be slower than GP32, so I’m not interested about that. However if (or when) OMAP3 based S60 devices get to the stores, I’m interested to try porting the PSX emu to S60. They are already doing amazing things with OMAP3 based linux devices.

  8. Summeli says:

Zaca11, this is it. There is no way to use the other processor (the other is just for DSP). I’m out of speed optimization tricks now. Only way to improve the speed is to use S60 phone with ARM11 processor

  9. zaca11 says:

The next version of the emulator will be playable in the N73 and the E65? this was slow: (

  10. Nokiaman says:

Don’t you get it?N73 and E65 lack of good hardware

  11. Khan4251 says:

    Sorry for bad english:/
N73&E65 220mhz CPU but dual core in phones doesn’t means that it’s powerfull like core2duo^^
Is it possible to port PSX4GP2X to phones like N95? or symbian it’s too slow for such emulation?

  12. zaca11 says:

that someone has not run in linux for nokia? already operate in the Siemens SX1, which also uses the same symbian nokia, then it would be possible?

  13. yanal says:

Great work. You say “All games are not working” which is impossible. It needs to be Not all games are working.

  14. sanamarcar says:

my dreams come true, we needed this emulator.
The fastest SNES emulator I’ve seen is the Nintendo DS, this one in particular that has the source code for ARM: http://www.snemul.com/ds/ you think may be helpful.
I have published this news in the most important Spanish-language mobile and i hope
you have all the support you need.

  15. Freddo says:

Well done! Too bad about the lack of sound emulation, but I hope it will run reasonably well on the 3xx MHz ARM11 phones eventually. And hopefully Nokia will announce some faster phones soon!

  16. khan4251 says:

When and what can we expect in the next update?

    • Summeli says:

I’m having a small break after last release, so don’t ask when 🙂 The next release will probably have some minor bug fixes and maybe support for new some new resolutions. 640 x 360 resolution would be nice for 5th edition support. I’m also planning to add sensor support (this is a must, if I want to support 5800 xpress music).

What he wrote is very intresting. That emulator he’s talking about runs at full speed with sound in many games.Chrono trigger is working great except for some bugs like red text because the developer didn’t update the project from a while.Anyway, my point is that the nintendo DS system has 2 cpu’s One 67 MHz ARM946E-S [2] and one 33 MHz ARM7TDMI.How can it run a snes emulator with sound at full speed and symbian phones with Opengl cannot?

  18. khan4251 says:

I tried to play chrono trigger on emulator on me n95, framerate is enough for me.
There is problem in game when you need pressing L+R+A emulator dont allow to use 3 keys at a time.
ZSNES on pc has was possibility to map 2 keys to one.
I would like to remap L and R to one key (center key) and then press “A”(play) but it didn’t working :/
Other things that i would like to have is:
    -more save/load slots.
-pause of game when you go to menu (its important when you want to save game).
-possibility to load second rom without exiting emulator.

    • Summeli says:

      Thanks for the bug report:
      -more save/load slots.
-pause of game when you go to menu (its important when you want to save game).
-possibility to load second rom without exiting emulator.
for key issues, I can’t do much, but I’m planning to fix these to the next release. They shouldn’t be too hard to fix 🙂

  19. khan4251 says:

I tried few times and L+R+A actualy works 😀

  20. khan4251 says:

If you press 3 buttons at once it works good…
but i didnt expect that you can use 3 buttons 🙂
Firstly i remaped 2 keys to one to try and it didn’t work and just then i tryied separately
Only when you will ad support to s60v5 there will be need to create L+R and some other keys.

  21. Psy says:

Can’t get it to even run on a Samsung i560. Might be because it’s not possible to install P.I.P.S v1.3 on it (the P.I.P.S 1.3 installer is locked to Nokia devices only unlike the v1.2 installer which works fine on all brands).
To say the truth I only got AnotherGuest’s emus to work fine on that Samsung. Everything else will either force me to use non-direct screen modes, have messed GFX (if direct screen mode is forced) or will not start at all (or crash) if it uses some libraries that come only with Nokia phones.

    • Summeli says:

I could get rid of the open c dependency, but I don’t have a samsung phone to test this with, so I’m sure that it’s even worth trying.

  22. Freddo says:

Nokia 5630 was announced today and it got a 600MHz ARM11 CPU! Should be able to handle a SNES emulator perfectly!
    http://www.forum.nokia.com/devices/5630_XpressMusic

  23. Freddo says:

khan4251, it’s only on PC computers the emulators are unable to use 3 keys at a time. This isn’t a limitation of the emulators, but actually a limitation of PC keyboards. If you use another platform, like S60, or joypads, this limitation is gone.
Although I wonder if bluetooth keyboards have the same limitation or not, but I doubt that.

  24. Zeek says:

    Hey…
Thanks for the Emulator… I have been searching for Snes emulator for my hp for about a year on-off kinda thing…
Anyway… you have my full support and my prayers…
I have a question… does AntSnes support N80…? cause i have an N80… and i would really like to run Snes on my N80…
I have been to alot of sites looking for one that works but the only one that even installs on my hp is yours… But thats all… i have up loaded a Snes rom but the Antsnes doesn’t load the games nor does it run the program… can you please help me or email me as to how to run the emu on my mobile… I am eternally greatful to you if i could some how manage to play Snes on my n80.. Thanks… and Goodluck…
    ~Zeek

    • Summeli says:

The N80 has different resolution than other s60 3.x devices. That’s why it doesn’t work for you. I will add that new resolution to my TODO list.

  25. ernart says:

Does antsnes support Ngage and QD?
I hope street fighter stuff and final fantasy games would be supported by antsnes.
I have been searching for a good snes emulator for phone. Thanks and more power for your great project!

    • Summeli says:

The AntSnes only supports phones from S60 3.0 onward. So original Ngage( i have this BTW:D) and QD support is not planned.

  26. Zeek says:

    Thanks alot… Summeli…
    I’d really appreciate it…
    You Rock….

BiG Respect for your amazing work in Antsnes. It’s like a fresh breeze in the almost dead Snes scene emulation on Symbian OS.
    Keep on the good work!!!!!!!
