AntSnes 0.8.1 for Symbian^3

AtnSnes is Snes9x emulator for Symbian. It is actually based on DrPocketSNES version 6.4.4, which in turn is based on snes9x 1.39
The new AntSnes comes with multitouch and with new transparent keys. You’ll need a Symbian^3 based phone to run this (N8, C7, E7 etc..). The old S60 5th edition is not supported by this version anymore.
Thanks for clpalmer for audiofixes and multitouch support!
What’s new

  • Audio is now better
  • The bugs in the keys are now fixed
  • Added an option for 4 directions D-PAD
  • You can hide only the overlapping keys with the screen.

Known issues:

  • Mounted shares breaks the filemanger, so do not use mounted shares.

There are two different installation packages now. One with the nokia’s smartinstaller that should install the Qt 4.7.3 for you, if you don’t have it yet, and one standalone package if you’re having trouble with the smartinstaller and you want to install the Qt 4.7.3 by yourself.

  1. Matoking says:

    Good job!
Can’t think of anything else to improve other than the obvious emulation improvements with sound, speed and probably compatibility (although SuperFX games could be really hard to implement)

    • clpalmer says:

I think SuperFX has better performance when based on the snes9x 1.43 release. Unfortunately, this one is based on 1.39 and there was some assembler rewrites that aren’t that straightforward to port.

  2. warcoke says:

i got Qt v4.7.3 vill this work?

  3. warcoke says:

oh dont bother that post 🙂

  4. Shinzx says:

perfect….i can run any games i want….thank so much

  5. warcoke says:

why super mario all stars doesnt work?

  6. Ashtray3250 says:

Dragon: Bruce Lee Stories not work all buttons and virtual buttons dont work too

  7. Michael says:

Good job sir!.. great improvement in such a short period of time.. Thank you so much

  8. KoAkuma says:

Great! So you really managed it to solve that “R-button” issue… Works like a charm now!!
Still there is something bugging me… I can’t get hardware keys working after I mapped them via the control-settings…
But I need to map them in order to proceed in one of my favorite SNES games ever: Chrono Trigger… There is that one riddle where you need to have a 3-key-combo to open a passage… It’s L + R + A.
I even tried to play via a connected USB-keyboard but also failed to succesfully map the keys… Don’t know if you are aware of that issue. It’s a minor problem though 😉
I want to thank you for your hard work! I totally appreciate this magnificent piece of work you shared with us 😀

    • Matoking says:

Map L, R and A buttons to a single button on your phone (I used the volume button) and use it. It worked for me. 🙂

      • KoAkuma says:

I was that wise already (mapped them to the volume keys and even to half way camera key…), but it doesn’t work for me…. I just aint got a clue why… 🙁
Even a PC USB-keyboard refuses to work with the key config… Also resetting the rom didn’t solve the issue…
        I think I gotta wait for a workaround 😉

  9. Michael says:

there still appears to be the problem in megaman x and some other games of holding down the y and b buttona and a direction key at the same time..hmm.. strange indeed.. but still.. beautiful update.. thanks again

  10. Ashtray3250 says:

Thank you so much Summeli, im hope in a future you released emulator psx, please continue you great work by you emulators.P.S. Sorry for my English

  11. Henker says:

Great – but how do you actually quit the emulator on an N8 ??

  12. Henker says:

    @KoAkuma – dooh… TY, appreciate it ! Sometimes I feel crippled on the N8 w/o a real keyboard…

    • KoAkuma says:

Since I had my 5800Xm I got pretty used to that fact 😉
Another way to exit of course is the taskmanager. Just press and hold down the menu key until the overview for running apps appears. There you can easily close the app by tapping on the cross-icon 😉
And you are welcome of course 😀
PS: if you wanna use a real keyboard, just plug an USB keyboard in your N8 using the USB-to-go dongle 😉

  13. Mr.Helpful says:

GREAT WORK SUMMELI. Magnificent job, I think I speak on everybody’s behalf when I say THANKYOU, BRO.

  14. Andreas Specht says:

Work great! thx! 33 FPS in super mario world with sound and 3 simultaneous keys (running and jumping)

  15. Strathos says:

    I don’t own a Symbian^3 device, but… Amazing work as always, Summeli!

  16. juangelini says:

    work on 5230 ???

  17. Ashtray3250 says:

The new AntSnes comes with multitouch and with new transparent keys. You’ll need a Symbian^3 based phone to run this (N8, C7, E7 etc..). The old S60 5th edition is not supported by this version anymore.

  18. TheOldLegend says:

works perfect the keys r much better now

  19. TheOldLegend says:

forgot to say that UR AMAZING SUMMELI AND CLAPMAR really great job =D

  20. Illbeanz says:

    Great work!
Problems with keys not present in this version, great turnaround!
    A few improvement suggestions:
Do you have plans to add an option to change the opacity of the buttons? Perhaps a slider to configure opacity? Would be a nice touch.
Is there any way you could stop the long press of the camera button from actually launching the camera?
Its quite easy to miss-press the ‘up’ cursor button, could the selection area be increased in height slightly?
The bottom right hand corner of the screen initiates the ‘A’ key! Load super mario world as an example.

    • clpalmer says:

Button opacity slider: Coming in the next release
Camera key long-press: Short answer, no, there’s a system-level binding between that and the camera app. You can override this with some native calls, but you need SwEvent capability, which would eliminate the ability to self-sign and everyone would have to submit it to Symbian to sign or have a cracked phone.

      • Summeli says:

SwEvent is not worth of the trouble with Symbian^3 devices. With S60 5th edition I went to this route, since the call RED/GREEN buttons were a must feature since they didn’t have the multitouch.

  21. Ashtray3250 says:

You will add support for BT joystick? Summeli please…

  22. Zach says:

You are the saviour for symbian users thanks in a million. I wish you will continue makin gba and ps1 emulator, and if possible pls also make nintendo64 or any sega emulator. Pardon my english…

  23. Ashtray3250 says:

In the game Donkey Kong 1,2,3 buttons do not work and the virtual buttons at the same

  24. Jud8 says:

I have a problem which isn’t really in the antsnes. Everything was working last week but this week somehow I can’t load my roms ( I mean it won’t open the QT explorer), I tried to install QT 4.7.3 again but it didn’t work (I can’t even see it in the installed programs section).
So yeah the problem is that whenever I push the “Load Rom” button nothing happens.

  25. TheOldLegend says:

really really really really really really really really great job well done and my thanks wont be enough for ur work i hope from all my heart that u’ll continue producing emualtors for us ur just so amazing and claplmar too u both make 1 hell of team thanks alooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot .. btw summeli can u overclock n8 cpu or make n8 uses full cpu speed all the time ? i think it’ll help the emulator it’ll fix speed issues it just an idea reply me plz =) and thanks again

    • clpalmer says:

Overclocking is handled in the firmware and can’t be controlled at all by user apps, so there’s no way to do this.
AntSnes will drive the N8 to use the full CPU unless the game is rendering already at 60FPS, where it’s capped as this was the original intended speed.

  27. cansual says:

hey Summeli this version works much smoother than 0.80
The framerate is much higher, without sound between 50-60fps and with sound between 20-30fps.
But i can’t press 3 buttons at once, i think nokias multitouch only supports 2 finger touch.
For example if i play super mario world and hold the run button and jump, than mario lost his speed in the air and slows down.
I think this is because you can’t press 3 buttons at once. I hope im not wrong ?

    • Summeli says:

yes, it only supports 2 fingers touch. However pressing Y and B with your thumb works at same success rate for me 🙂 I’ll try to make a video with successful flying 😛

      • cansual says:

I hope it’s possible to support 3 or 4 fingers touch.
I test now 2 other games and it’s only support 2 fingers now it’s proved.
Good luck i hope you can make this.
And i have one question summeli. is your emulator working over the cpu or gpu.
Keep it up your great work and don’t forgett that you are the first one who creates a snes emulator for symbian touch.

        • Summeli says:

It’s using the GPU for rendering. The audio takes more processing time than I expected, but that’s just the way it goes.

          • clpalmer says:

S^3 devices only support dual touch, so you can’t touch more than two keys at once. You can program a hardware key to a 3rd one (or several) if you need 3 at once.

  28. Steve says:

great improvement, almost perfect emulation now! Finally a decent emulator for Symbian! The only problem i have is when i map keys to a usb keyboard they seem to stick and won’t allow multiple presses? Great work, thanks for all your effort!

  29. alwa88 says:

Vibra response for buttons would be nice.. Thanks runs great!

  30. chrono says:

And of course GREAT WORK. THANX.

  34. chrono says:

Summeli how do i sign up for the wordpress thing? i mean ive got an account for anime4iphone that uses wordpress but when i attempt to use that account for this wordpress is not working so umm……wheres the register button?

  35. chrono says:

Summeli i know this is stupid but by any chance is it possible to emulate the nintendo DS on my nokia n8? and if so can you tell me what their names are plz n thx ^_^

  36. chrono says:

Summueli i know im really pushing it but for your next version do u mind if u fix the glitch with sound cause whenever i start antsnes i always have to do it twice if ive got sound on cause it crashes the first timme then works the second. and can you also fix the part where if i use the internet for like a walkthrough and then antsnes closes itself if ive got sound on plz n thx

  37. clpalmer says:

    AntSnes + WiiMote + SWiiPlayer + HDMI Out + TV = nicely playable 🙂

    • Antonio says:

SWiiPlayer? I thought that wasn’t released yet? I’m still using MobiPad from S60v3, but I’d love if SWiiPlayer were released, specially if I could use the accelerometer data for current Symbian games!
There is a port of Quake 2 for S60v3 that works on Symbian^3, and there is also a “modded” version from this source that allows using the N95’s accelerometer for playing (works SO MUCH better than using keys for aiming). What I wanted to try out is to use an app such as MobiPad or SWiiPlayer to connect to the Wiimote, and then use the accelerometer data to aim in Quake 2, just like I did with my N95. However, the modded version that uses the phone’s built-in accelerometer does not work on Symbian^3 (signed or not, the game won’t open).
Have you (and Summeli) ever thought about using the Wiimote as a console controller that it is for playing games on the N8 via HDMI/tv-out? Theoretically it is simple: just bind the game keys to the Wiimote buttons, and make use of the Wiimote’s accelerometer instead of the phone’s built-in accelerometer. That would really be GREAT.

  38. Zach says:

I want gba and ps1 or N64 emulator pls Summeli if possible make one I don’t mind to pay. Pls Save our N8 gaming from this dying era of symbian games.

  39. kamuscasio says:

Awesome!!!!! Thank you so much for this!

  40. Mathroule says:

Thanks for this released, but i have a problem on my N8.
I install the smart installer version and when i click on Load ROM, nothing happen.

  41. Yang says:

Hope to see a full screen version.

  42. Mapantz says:

Doesn’t work for me. I have the latest Qt files installed, as i use a couple of Qt apps already. But as soon as i click ‘continue’ when the emulator is open, it just shuts down.

  43. Marcos a. says:

    Great Job Summeli !

  44. AMLT says:

well works ok, but in some games controls are not working: mortal combat 2, donkeykong country, junglebook, nba hang time.
game glitches: earth worm jim 2 not working, nba jam tournament visual artifact loss, etc.
overall with sound saw just some games running well: mario world, boogerman. Low performance in frames when sound is on in other games.
When shutting program from quick menu , program hangs up and needs to reset phone.
well im happy that keys are responsive maybe could be bigger spaces, and in the top keys could be configure because in nba jam tournament run buttons is there and impossible to play.
well Summeli over all good job, keep going , maybe will bring more emu’s ,
sorry for writable mistakes, wrote from phone.
    kind regards,

  45. X6 says:
